Smart DNA, a leading DNA testing center based in Lagos, has released its comprehensive 2024 report on DNA testing trends in Nigeria, covering the period from July 2023 to June 2024. The report reveals striking insights into paternity uncertainty, immigration patterns, and regional disparities in access to DNA testing services.

One of the most significant findings from the report is that 27% of paternity tests conducted returned negative results, indicating that more than one in four men tested were not the biological fathers of the children in question. This high rate of paternity uncertainty underscores the complex societal dynamics and changing family structures in Nigeria.

The report also highlighted a sharp increase in DNA tests conducted for immigration purposes, reflecting the growing trend of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad—often referred to as the “Japa” trend. This surge in immigration-related DNA testing suggests that more parents with dual citizenship are processing emigration paperwork for their children.

In terms of regional dominance, Lagos emerged as the leading hub for DNA testing in Nigeria, accounting for an overwhelming 73.1% of all tests conducted. The data further revealed a stark divide within Lagos, with 67.5% of tests performed on the Mainland compared to 32.5% on the Island. This concentration of DNA testing in Lagos underscores the economic disparities within the city and across the country, raising concerns about access to such services in other regions of Nigeria.
