Members-elect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed confidence that the ongoing dispute over the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the 10th Assembly will be resolved peacefully.
During a media briefing at the Induction event for returning and newly elected lawmakers organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), the lawmakers voiced their support for Hon. Muktar Betara Aliyu, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, who is a leading candidate for the Speakership.
Former Speaker of the Gombe House of Assembly, Hon. Garba Inuwa, praised Betara as the most qualified aspirant following extensive consultations with other candidates. “The goal of the Greater Majority is to ensure a focused and effective leadership for the 10th Assembly that will foster unity and collaboration among members,” Inuwa stated.
He emphasized that Betara’s qualifications, experience, and dedication make him a suitable choice for the role. “Given Nigeria’s current challenges, effective leadership is crucial. The fact that many opposition members are willing to support a candidate from the ruling party highlights Betara’s commitment and understanding of legislative responsibilities. This will benefit the government and the country.”
Inuwa assured that a majority of the Greater Majority group supports Betara’s candidacy. “If the election were held today, Betara would be elected Speaker. His leadership will serve the interests of Nigerians. It is undemocratic and unconstitutional for someone else to choose the Speaker for us. We will vote for the person who will deliver justice and effective governance, and that person is Aliyu Muktar Betara,” he concluded.
