Segun Showunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has lauded Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for his efforts in facilitating a diplomatic resolution of the defamation issue involving Dele Farotimi. Obi’s visit to Afe Babalola, who had filed a defamation suit against human rights lawyer Farotimi over allegations made in his book, has sparked mixed reactions.
While Obi’s visit has faced criticism, including from former AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, Showunmi praised Obi’s actions as demonstrating strong leadership qualities.
In a statement, Showunmi said, “Dear Peter Obi, I consider your efforts on the Dele Farotimi saga a great sign and commendable effort! Your empathetic leadership credentials are greatly acknowledged. Since the 2023 election, you have been dedicated to doing your best. I am proud to know you, and I believe that tomorrow holds great promise for our nation because of men like you. Okwute Nigeria, as I fondly call you, I am proud of you. A leader must do all he can to rescue one of his own.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Moses Paul, a close ally of Peter Obi, has defended the visit, urging Sowore to cease his criticism of Obi’s actions.
