A former police officer in Edo State, Inspector Edith Uduma, has made alarming threats to take her own life and that of her children, following her dismissal from the force. Uduma’s dismissal came after she exposed a disturbing incident of alleged rape involving a colleague, Sergeant Abraham, at a police station in the South Ibie area of Edo State.
The incident, which Uduma recorded in October, showed Sergeant Abraham in a compromising position with a 17-year-old girl, who was seen lying on a chair while Abraham hurriedly adjusted his clothing. The video went viral, prompting an internal investigation and the eventual dismissal of both officers involved.
However, the Edo State Police Command has accused Uduma of conspiring with her husband, Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed, to extort N1 million from Sergeant Abraham to cover up the rape incident. According to the police, when Abraham offered only N45,000, Uduma released the video online. In a statement issued in November, the police claimed that instead of reporting the incident, Uduma sought to exploit the situation for personal gain. Both Uduma and Sergeant Abraham were dismissed after an orderly room trial, while Uduma’s husband was demoted.
Uduma has vehemently denied these allegations. In an interview with PUNCH Metro, she insisted that she was not given a fair hearing and accused the Edo police of unjustly dismissing her due to a lack of influential connections. She expressed her frustration and desperation, threatening to kill herself and her children if she did not receive justice.
The former officer also claimed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the station instructed her to request N1 million from Sergeant Abraham, alleging it was meant to entice him to return and face disciplinary actions. She further questioned the integrity of the investigation, expressing disbelief that the police force would treat one of their own this way.
“I want justice. My dismissal is unjust,” Uduma tearfully stated, stressing that the matter was still under investigation by the Force Headquarters in Abuja when her dismissal was rushed through.
The spokesperson for the Edo Police Command, Moses Yamu, has not responded to repeated requests for comment.
