A police station in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was targeted in a violent attack early Tuesday morning. Armed assailants launched the assault, resulting in the death of a police corporal, whose identity has not yet been released.

According to reports, the attackers, suspected to be separatist militants, threw petrol bombs at the police station, causing fires that damaged several offices, including the Oba Civic Center. The assailants also engaged in sporadic gunfire as they tried to breach the facility.

State Police Command Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating, “The suspected armed secessionist group used petrol bombs to ignite fires at the police station and the Oba Civic Center. Tragically, the police corporal succumbed to his injuries, while other officers and the joint security response team managed to extinguish the flames.”

Ikenga added that a coordinated operation involving the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies is underway in Oba and surrounding areas to address the situation.

Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned the attack as an invasion of security installations and a direct assault on the nation’s security forces. He vowed that those responsible for this violent act will be brought to justice.
