Nollywood veteran Rita Edochie has stirred strong reactions online after condemning women who become second wives.

Edochie shared a clip from a cleric’s sermon in which the cleric says that women who take on the role of second wives are driven by jealousy and greed, and that they resort to witchcraft.

Supporting the sermon, Rita added her own sharp critique. She wrote:

> “If you’re a second wife, you are nothing but a witch. You are not innocent, you are not special, you are just greedy. You have chosen to feed on another woman’s tears, to build your happiness on someone else’s pain. Do not call it love, it is wickedness. Do not call it destiny, it is covetousness. You stole what was not yours, and you expect to be celebrated? Never. A second wife is not a queen. She is a usurper. You are the thief that slipped into another woman’s home pretending to be a bride. And know this: the same tears you caused will cry against you, the same pain you caused will visit your doorstep. There is no glory in being a second wife — only shame, curses, and the unending reminder that you could never be first.”

Her message has drawn mixed responses: some agree with her stance, citing moral and cultural concerns, while others criticize the language used and argue that it deepens stigma.
