Veteran Nollywood comedian Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, has opened up about the reasons behind his late marriage during a candid chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo. Now 61 and a seasoned lecturer in Theatre Arts at Lagos State University of Education, Oyetoro confided that both personal insecurities and financial limitations played key roles in postponing his wedding.

The actor—who tied the knot at age 40—said he “did not have confidence” and faced significant financial hurdles, including not owning a car after graduating. He recalled:

“I got married late because of two things, which are myself and my profession… As at then, there was no money in theatre arts and nobody recognised artistes. We were just doing it for passion.”

He also shared a turn in his romantic life that influenced his choices. A prospective partner once insisted he own two cars before marrying, a demand that helped him realise they weren’t meant to be. He said:

“The woman I was supposed to marry said I must have two cars before I can marry her. Then something told me that this is not my wife.”

Eventually, Oyetoro found his life partner, Olaide Oyetoro, marrying her in 2003. The couple has been blessed with three children.

Beyond his personal reflections, Oyetoro also commented on how the Nigerian theatre industry lacked training on monetising talent. As he put it, “they did not teach us how to make money from the theatre”. He now pays “school fees with grey hair,” a lighthearted reminder of his journey.
