Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has launched the construction of an intra-city rail network to connect Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, marking the first rail project of its kind in Nigeria’s northern region.

The first phase will establish 12 designated terminals across Maiduguri, linking important locations such as markets, schools, public spaces, and key economic areas. The rail network is designed to improve transportation for passengers and goods, enhance economic activities, and expand trade corridors within the state.

Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, the state’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, provided updates during an inspection of the rail project. Feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are currently being conducted to ensure the project’s success.

Once completed, the rail network is expected to transform transportation in Maiduguri by offering a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative. It will complement other infrastructure initiatives, including the ongoing expansion of the 113-kilometer Maiduguri East, West, and South ring roads.

Governor Zulum’s administration has also introduced subsidized electric and gas-powered taxis and buses to ease transportation costs for Maiduguri residents, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies.

This rail project is part of Zulum’s broader efforts to restore peace, promote economic growth, and rebuild Borno State’s infrastructure after years of disruption caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.
