Dozens of people were killed in violent clashes between football fans on Sunday at a match in N’Zerekore, Guinea’s second-largest city. Hospital sources reported scenes of mass carnage, with bodies overwhelming the local hospital and morgue.

“There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see. Others are lying in the hallways. The morgue is full,” one doctor, speaking anonymously, told AFP. He estimated the death toll at around 100, while another doctor confirmed “dozens” of fatalities.

Videos shared on social media, though unverified, showed chaos in the streets surrounding the match, with numerous bodies lying on the ground. Witnesses also reported that demonstrators vandalized and set fire to the local police station.

The violence reportedly began after a controversial decision by the referee, leading to fans storming the pitch. The match was part of a tournament held in honor of Guinea’s junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, who took power in a 2021 coup. The tournament reflects Doumbouya’s ongoing efforts to build political support ahead of potential elections next year.

Doumbouya, who ousted President Alpha Conde in September 2021, had promised to restore civilian rule by 2024. However, he recently indicated that he would extend his military-led government, further stoking tensions in the country.

In January, Doumbouya promoted himself to lieutenant general and, last month, to army general, signaling his strengthened hold on power amid ongoing unrest.
