Nigerian athletes faced setbacks at the 2024 Olympics in Paris as Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro, and Prestina Ochonogor fell short of the podium in the women’s long jump. The event was won by Tara Davis-Woodhall of the US, with Germany’s Malaika Mihambo securing silver and Jasmine Moore from the US taking bronze.

In women’s wrestling, Odunayo Adekuoroye fought valiantly but was defeated in the quarterfinals, thus missing a spot in the semifinals. Additionally, in the women’s canoe single 200m event, Ayomide Bello and Beauty Akinaere Otuedo were unable to advance to the semifinals.

With just two days remaining until the close of the 2024 Olympics, Nigeria’s hopes of securing a medal rest largely on Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles. The Olympics are scheduled to end on Sunday, August 11, and as of now, Nigeria has not made it onto the medals table.

Today, Nigerian fans will be keenly watching Amusan, who advanced to the semi-finals with a time of 12.49 seconds, ahead of America’s Alaysha Johnson (12.61 seconds) and Janeek Brown (12.84 seconds). Amusan must finish in the top two of her heat to progress to the final, which is set for Saturday, August 10.
